Stainless steels in swimming pools: How to improve the safety?

If applied in the atmosphere of indoor swimming pools, stainless steel structural elements (e.g. fasteners) may suffer stress corrosion cracking. They may rupture and cause accidents.

Ironhaven BV did a lot of climate testing and consultancy in order to improve the safety in the swimming pools. Jan Heselmans of Ironhaven was the Chair of the former NACE TG 498, a Task Group for developing a NACE Standard with the title: "Materials Selection and Inspection of Structural Elements (e.g. fasteners) in the Atmosphere of Indoor Swimming Pools". NACE protects people, assets and the environment from corrosion (www.nace.org).

On account of a fatal accident in the Netherlands, Ironhaven BV and NACE Section Benelux advised the minister of internal affairs and the Dutch parliament about a Law with regard to this subject. Jan Heselmans: "The Bouwbesluit article 5.12 forbids the use of stainless steel structural elements (e.g. fasteners) in the atmosphere of indoor swimming pools."
